The Oxilum and OxiBrake smart bicycle and e-scooter accessories from designers Jérémy Pointel and Philippe Arrouart increase rider visibility to ensure their increased safety. The smart tools were developed for the French start-up Overade and come in the form of a strong, curved light that fits any helmet and includes built-in reflectors. By stepping on the brake pedal, a signal is delivered to the light, which then illuminates more vigorously.

The newly developed OxiBrake is the first gadget that can detect braking intention through pressure on the bike lever. Existing brake lights don’t work efficiently because they use accelerometers. This tool is much different: OxiBrake is a large comfortable silicon surface that you naturally press when braking, much like a car pedal. Using a force sensor, it fits any brake lever thanks to its adaptable design.
‘Safety is the first reason why people don’t want to use a bike or e-scooter. With those new devices Overade expects to increase riders’ safety, being more visible and predictable in traffic’, shares the design team.‘Thanks to this new equipment (…) all commuters will soon enjoy the city’. Oxilum and OxiBrake are expected to enter commercial production within 2022, after an ongoing Kickstarter campaign.
